Agam Darshi is an award-winning actress, writer, director, and producer. Born in England and raised all over Canada, she currently lives in LA. You can catch her in a lead role in Funny Boy, based on Shyam Selvadurai’s best-selling novel, on Netflix.

As an activist for race equality in media, Agam cofounded the International South Asian Film Festival, now in its eighth year. The festival works to break stereotypes and expand North American views on South Asian culture. We talked to Agam about her go-to happy things.

I love all things Elizabeth Gilbert, and I particularly love this book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. In it Elizabeth explores creativity and the idea that our genius is not something we can take pride in but rather an external energy, and that the key to a creative, bountiful life is following our own curiosity.

8. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

This is the book I turn to when I need comfort and to feel like life is good. The world is so specific, and the character of Jo March was one who I completely identified with—she’s headstrong, creative, and wants to go out into the world and make a difference. She is my favorite protagonist to this day.
